WRI published a study of climate-resilient cities. It was created  by the collaboration of several authors and designers. The report is based on WRI India’s works in Karnataka, Kerala and Maharashtra. It integrates equity into climate action planning. Aiming to help Indian officials, consultants and planners understand the climate hazards, causes and impacts.

The report features a Climate Hazard and Vulnerability Assessment framework. This tool provides a view of the hazards and social factors behind climate change. Understanding these is crucial to formulating adaptable and resilient interventions.

Highlights of the WRI report on climate-resilient cities

  • Indian cities are rapidly moving towards climate hazards. However, every city has different factors of hazard depending on the economy, politics, culture and society.
  • The CHVA was primarily for urban policymakers, planners, and practitioners. It helps understand the relationship between socioeconomic factors and climate hazards.
  • CHVA helps fill the gap that existing assessments often fail to capture. Such as forms of economic and sociopolitical inequality.
  • The CHVA has three parts: vulnerability assessment, exposure analysis, and hazard identification and assessment. This helps it analyse vulnerability at different levels.
  • CHVA gives an in-depth report by assessing the hazards of critical infrastructure and the vulnerability of people. City-level data is used along with alternative local data sources.
  • Changes in approach along with broader planning will help bring about transformation in Indian cities.
