What is a heat wave, you ask? It is a period of abnormally hot weather generally lasting more than two days. We in India had 329 such days in two years – 2022 and 2023. That means temperatures were high enough to prove fatal to the human body when exposed.
The effects of El Nino and climate change hammered down on the Indian subcontinent, putting at particular risk India’s vulnerable populations – slum dwellers, outdoor workers, persons with disabilities, women, children, senior citizens, and professional athletes.
Overall, too, heat waves have an adverse impact in several ways: increased energy consumption, low labour activity, water shortages and wildfires, risk to human and animal health, impact on agriculture, and stress of health systems.
