State of Forest in Madhya Pradesh: Analyzing the key results from the Indian State of Forest Report 2023

The India State of Forest Report (ISFR), published by the Forest Survey of India (FSI) under the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, provides a comprehensive assessment of the country's forest and tree resources. Released every two years, the latest edition was launched on 21st December 2023 at the Forest Research Institute, Dehradun.

We have prepared a quick factsheet analyzing the key results of the ISFR 2023 for Madhya Pradesh. For instance:

  • Madhya Pradesh recorded the maximum decrease in forest and tree cover—a loss of 612.41 sq km, approximately the size of Indore city.
  • Despite this, Madhya Pradesh remains the state with the largest forest cover in India, with 77,073 sq km, constituting 25% of the state’s total geographical area.
