The year 2024 has been recorded as the hottest year on record, with global temperatures rising sharply to 1.55°C (34.79°F) above pre-industrial levels. This unprecedented warming has intensified the frequency and severity of extreme weather events across the world.
In 2024, extreme weather events were recorded on 255 out of 274 days, equivalent to 93% of the year, a significant increase compared to 86% in 2023 and 88% in 2022.
Among Indian states, Madhya Pradesh has suffered the most, experiencing extreme weather nearly every other day in 2024.
Between 2019 and 2024, Madhya Pradesh recorded an annual average of 310 deaths caused by natural disasters such as tropical cyclones, heavy rainfall, floods, and severe thunderstorms.
This report tracks the frequency, intensity, and wide-ranging impacts of these extreme weather events in Madhya Pradesh throughout 2024. It highlights the urgent need for effective adaptation strategies, including improved early warning systems and local climate resilience plans.
