On August 19, 2024, the Hema Committee report brought serious issues of sexual harassment and exploitation in the Malayalam film industry to light. Submitted to the Kerala government nearly five years ago, the report reveals a widespread culture of abuse controlled by influential men.
Widespread Harassment: The report indicates that sexual harassment is common, with women often coerced into sexual favors under threat of losing their jobs. A powerful "mafia" of men controls and suppresses dissent.
Poor Working Conditions: The report highlights inadequate facilities for female artists, such as a lack of toilets and changing rooms, leading to uncomfortable and humiliating situations during shoots.
High-Profile Allegations: Following the report, several women have accused prominent actors and directors of misconduct. Notably, actor Siddique resigned from AMMA, and filmmaker Ranjith stepped down from the Kerala Chalachitra Academy amid allegations.
Legal Action: The Kerala government has set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to further investigate the claims. FIRs have been filed, including one against Ranjith for assault.
Impact on WCC: The Women in Cinema Collective (WCC), formed in response to these issues, has faced backlash despite its efforts to improve working conditions.
