India’s Undertrial crisis

In India, there are 4,34,302 undertrial prisoners, with the number increasing by 40.7% since 2017. Overcrowding in prisons is caused by long delays in trials and many people being held before their trial. Section 479 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, aims to help by making it easier for first-time offenders to get bail.
