The India TB Report 2024 highlights crucial advancements in tackling tuberculosis (TB).

Key points include:

  1. Reduction in Missing Cases: The number of missing TB cases decreased from 3.2 lakh in 2022 to 2.3 lakh in 2023, largely due to the Ni-kshay portal that tracks patients.
  2. High Treatment Initiation: India achieved a 95% treatment initiation rate for diagnosed patients. Additionally, 58% were tested for drug resistance, up from 25% in 2015.
  3. Private Sector Involvement: The private sector contributed nearly 33% of the 25.5 lakh reported cases in 2023, a significant increase from 1.9 lakh in 2015.
  4. Mortality Rates: TB-related mortality remained around 3.2 lakh in 2023, showing a decline from previous years, with overall mortality dropping from 4.94 lakhs in 2021 to 3.31 lakhs in 2022.

The National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP) has been instrumental in expanding TB services by integrating them with general health care. This integration ensures that TB services are accessible and aligned with overall health initiatives, improving patient outcomes and streamlining care delivery across the health system.

Despite these strides, India faces challenges in eliminating TB by 2025 and is revising protocols to tackle high incidence and mortality rates while introducing new technologies to meet Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and End TB targets by 2030 and 2035.
