India's National Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) 2023 provides a comprehensive assessment of poverty that considers factors beyond income, aiding effective policymaking to address poverty in all its dimensions.

Key Highlights:

  • India's Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) improved from 0.117 in 2015-16 to 0.066 in 2019-21.
  • The percentage of people in multidimensional poverty decreased from 24.85% to 14.96%.
  • Approximately 135.5 million people were lifted out of poverty, marking a 9.89 percentage point decrease. - The severity of poverty among those affected decreased from 47.14% to 44.39%.
  • Rural areas saw faster poverty reduction (from 32.59% to 19.28%) compared to urban areas (8.65% to 5.27%).
  • States like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Rajasthan showed significant improvements.

Significance:

These achievements are a major step towards the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of halving multidimensional poverty by 2030. The report highlights India's significant progress in poverty alleviation ahead of the SDGs' 2030 deadline.
