Heatwaves in India are getting worse, causing hundreds of deaths and putting millions at risk. But under the Disaster Management Act, they aren’t officially recognized as disasters. This means states can’t access central relief funds to help people.
With 23 states now vulnerable and over 269 suspected deaths, and 161 confirmed heatstroke deaths reported in 2024, some states are pushing for change—but will the Centre act before it’s too late?
