The UN Environment Programme published the food waste index report on March 27, 2024. It grasps the extent of food waste to reduce food waste and achieve SDG 12.3.

Food waste measures allow countries to understand the issue and reveal the size of opportunity. While establishing a base point to track progress.

The report aims to reveal global food waste in food services, retail, and households. The food waste data at the household level is quite high and more consistent as compared to previous years.

Key highlights of the food waste index report

  • The report builds on its predecessor in three ways.
  • It provides a significantly more robust global and national estimate by integrating expanded data points from around the world.
  • It offers enhanced guidance on measurement across retail, household, and food services. By expanding on the SDG 12.3 food waste measurement methodology,.
  • Chapter 3 explores additional methodologies, their strengths and limitations, and strategies to prioritise sub-sector measurement.
  • Instead of focusing on food waste metrics, the report also explores food waste reduction solutions. It provides effective approaches to reduce food waste globally, with a focus on public-private partnerships.
