Rishabh Shrivastava (Co-founder and Chief Editor) and Abhimanyu Shrivastava (Programme Lead) of TA attended a two-day Climate Data Journalism workshop organized by the IndiaSpend and Azim Premji University, Bhopal on 11th and 12th August 2023. The workshop focused on training environmental journalists, communicators, editors, and researchers in data journalism, visualization, and verification.
The two-day workshop was organized at the newly built campus of Azim Premji University in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
Speakers with more than ten years of experience in climate change communications and media were invited to deliver the learning sessions for the participants.
Speakers from Azim Premji University’s Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability, Centre for Science and Environment, IndiaSpend, and Boom Live were invited to interact and train the participants.
The sessions focused on vital aspects of climate change and data journalism such as how to frame stories and pitch them to publications, data research, analysis, and visualization. The participants were also trained in how to write proposals when applying for media grants. Lastly, a detailed session was organized on fact-checking by using various multimedia tools.
“We are glad that we participated in this programme. These two days were really engaging and the hands-on training during each session helped us understand how to leverage the power data while communicating about issues of climate change and science” says Rishabh Shrivastava.
Journalists, lawyers, researchers, communicators, and development practitioners from Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh participated in the workshop, making the training cohort diverse.
“It is good to see such programmes where professionals in Madhya Pradesh and Central India region are coming together. The region faces a range of climate change issues and it is important that they are studied and documented by local media. I am sure this training will help us create that space”, says Abhimanyu Shrivastava.
The participants were provided with a certificate at the end of the two-day workshop.
