The report on the degradation of the Kshipra River, presented by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India, sheds light on critical environmental concerns and administrative oversights. Highlighting issues such as pollution, inadequate urban planning, and declining river flow, the report underscores the urgent need for comprehensive solutions to preserve the health and sustainability of the river ecosystem.

Highlights of the Report :

  • Water Quality Concerns: Pollution has significantly impacted the water quality and groundwater flow in the Kshipra River and its tributaries. This pollution poses serious environmental and public health risks.
  • Lack of Urban Planning: Urban bodies in Ujjain and Alot have neglected to formulate comprehensive city cleanliness plans. This oversight contributes to the deterioration of the river's ecosystem and surrounding areas.
  • Sewerage Network Deficiencies: Major urban centers like Indore, Dewas, and Ujjain lack adequate planning for sewerage networks. This absence of infrastructure exacerbates pollution problems and hampers efforts to improve water quality.
  • Decline in River Flow: Over the past few decades, there has been a noticeable decline in the flow of the Kshipra River, particularly since 2001. This reduced flow adversely affects the river's ecosystem, leading to near-drying conditions before and after the monsoon seasons.
  • Ineffective Water Management Practices: Measures such as rainwater harvesting and river water rejuvenation have not been implemented effectively. This failure to utilize available resources further compounds the challenges faced in restoring the river's health.
  • Industrial Pollution: Industries operating without valid establishment and operation consents contribute significantly to pollution levels in the river. This unchecked industrial activity poses a serious threat to the river's ecosystem and public health.
  • Encroachment and Development Issues: Encroachments in floodplain zones and inadequate riverbank development exacerbate the degradation of the river. Effective management of these areas is crucial for maintaining the river's ecological balance and resilience.
  • Need for Comprehensive Solutions: The report emphasizes the urgent need for comprehensive planning and effective implementation measures. Recommendations include preparing city cleanliness plans, developing sewerage networks, resolving encroachments, implementing guidelines for ghats cleaning, and improving tree plantation efforts along riverbanks.

These highlighted issues underscore the importance of concerted efforts to address the degradation of the Kshipra River and ensure the long-term sustainability of its ecosystem and surrounding areas.
